Tips for flying with toddlers for the first time

Posted on January 27, 2021January 27, 2021 by Lyndsey OHalloran

Going on any holiday with a toddler can seem like a daunting prospect, but flying with a toddler is an even bigger deal. Although you might be worried about how the flight will go, there are certain things that you can do to make the trip easier. Here are some tips for flying with toddlers for the first time:

Prepare them

Toddlers understand more than you might realise. You can work on preparing your child for their first flight weeks beforehand by doing things like reading books about planes, watching videos, drawing pictures etc. An airport and a plane are really big and exciting things for small children and they’re bound to get overwhelmed without talking to them about it first.

All the snacks

When it comes to children you can never have too many snacks, especially when you’ll be in a position where you can’t get any more. Most airlines allow pre-packaged snacks like crisps and chocolate bars to go through security but if not, you will always find somewhere like Boots on the other side here in the UK.

If you have some left over after the flight try to keep them for the return journey if you have one.

Handy hand luggage

Depending on your child’s age they will likely have their own seat and therefore have their own hand luggage. Ensure that you make the most of this by packing plenty of activities like colouring and small games, multiple changes of clothes and nappies as well as any wipes and food your child might need.

Technology is your friend

We all talk about limiting screen time but it’s important to know when to pick your battles. Even a short 4 hour flight can feel like a million years with a toddler and fun games, videos and cartoons can be a great distraction for a while.

Plan your flight times

Nowadays, even package holidays come with a choice of flight times, even if changing might incur an additional cost. If there is an option, it might be easier if your flight, especially a long one, is over night or around your child’s nap time.

Comfortable clothes

This one goes for both you and your child. Seats on planes can be quite small and there isn’t always a lot of space. Wearing loose clothes such as t-shirts, leggings or jogging bottoms can help everyone to be as comfortable as possible during the flight.

A friendly face

Most young children will have a favourite toy or teddy. When experiencing something new, exciting and maybe a bit scary, children might find something familiar quite soothing and comforting. It’s also important to remember this if your child likes a certain soft toy to go to sleep with.

Flights with children don’t need to be as scary as they seem and really, it’s all about the preparation.
