When we talk about sleeping patterns and routines, we tend to talk about babies and small children. However, as adults it’s just as important that we do what we can to ensure we get a decent amount of, and decent quality of sleep. There are various things you can do at home to create a relaxing space for a better night’s sleep, whether that be in your own bedroom or in a spare bedroom for someone else:
Take a technology break
In the kind of world we live in now it’s really easy to get distracted by our technology. That might be working late if you work from home or are self-employed or maybe you are on your phone right up until you go to bed.
Turning off technology for at least an hour before you go to bed can really help you to turn off your mind and to stop having quite as much going around in your head.
Declutter
It’s hard to relax in a room where there is ‘stuff’ everywhere. If your bedroom becomes a dumping ground, this can end up being quite a stressful environment and not one that is a peaceful place to sleep in. Make sure you declutter your bedroom and get rid of anything that doesn’t need to be there.
Peace and quiet
There’s nothing worse than trying to get to sleep and being distracted by noises. To help keep your room quiet make sure you don’t fall asleep with the TV or radio on and turn off the sound on your mobile phone if you’re able to.
Some people live in quite noisy areas, especially in busy cities, and these outside noises can be a real distraction. Sound machines or music designed to help you sleep can be a big help but remember to set them on a timer so they’re not running all night.
A comfortable bed
There is something to be said for investing in a comfortable bed, mattress and bedding. Mattresses are supposed to be replaced every 7 years or so and no one wants to try to sleep with springs sticking into their backs.
Not only that but everybody likes a certain kind of pillow or the feel of a particular type of bedding. It might be a bit of trial and error before you find what’s right for you but it will be worth finding.
A fresh coat of paint
Certain colours or patterns in a bedroom can be quite hard on the eyes. Bright pink might not be the most relaxing colour for getting a good night’s sleep. A bedroom could feel much more relaxing if it is painted in a much calmer colour.
Figure out what you can start with easily and work from there. A small change could really make a big difference to how you sleep.
