If you’re planning a big clear out and want to make sure the mess stays gone, you’ll need to spend a couple days getting jobs like these done first. Yes, even the clear up needs preparing for! And while that may extend your decluttering deadline by a few extra hours, it does mean you’ll do a more thorough and complete job, which you should absolutely be proud of! As such, make sure you get the three tasks below ticked off before you empty that wardrobe or pull out the fridge to see what’s behind it.
Cover Anything You Don’t Want Covered in Dust
If you’re going to be clearing the house out, you’re going to be attacking every height of the house. Upstairs and downstairs, high shelves and low coffee tables, on tops of wardrobes and the kitchen cupboards – everything is going to come out and be assessed!
As such, make sure you cover anything you don’t want covered in dust before you get started. You can do this with an old sheet you’ve dug out of an ottoman, but you can also buy specific furniture coverings if you don’t have any of these to hand. Older furniture especially needs covering, as even a bit of dust could totally ruin the upholstery!
Hire a Skip
You don’t want to hire a skip last minute! You’re going to want one sorted and ready to be delivered to you at least a day before you’re ready to clear out the house. You should be able to find a reliable skip in hire in your area, and the sooner you get one on the way to your home, the less you’ll have to worry about making a mess and not having anywhere to put it.
So, make sure the need for a skip is on your to-do list right now and get it ticked off as soon as you can. You don’t even need to hire a giant skip that takes up the whole road, if that’s a worry of yours. A ‘mini’ 2 yard one will do, as you can get a good 20 or so rubbish bags in one, with the slightly bigger 4 yard version taking around twice that amount.
Get Plenty of Donation Bags
Donation bags need to be ordered and/or grabbed in bulk, as you can never be sure how many items you’re going to want to take down the charity shop! If it’s in good condition but isn’t worth very much, pop it in one of these bags for easy sorting and then nip it along to the nearest donation centre. A good clear out means passing a bit of good will along as well, so don’t forget about this in your quest to clear your home of mess and clutter!
If you want to clear your house out, get a few jobs out of the way that’ll make the process much easier on you and anyone you’ve brought in to help out!
