Tips for making the most of a small kitchen

Posted on January 18, 2021January 20, 2021 by Lyndsey OHalloran

A lot of people say that their kitchen is the place they spend the most time in. However, if your home only has a small kitchen this isn’t really possible and it’s easy to get frustrated with the lack of space. There are ways that you can make the most of a small kitchen though.

Clever storage

Small kitchens tend to lack a lot of cupboard space so it can be difficult to find a home for everything. You can get quite creative with storage though. Add additional racks inside shelves, use command hooks for under the sink storage or maybe install pull out rails! There are loads of different ways to use strange or dead spaces.

Additional shelving

Does the space above your cupboards get forgotten about or misused? If you have quite a large space here then it might be worth thinking about adding another shelf. This way, you will have space to store lots more smaller items that maybe only get used a few times a year. This would free up space in cupboards that you use on a more regular basis.

Utilise hooks

Hooks can be a great way to store items around the kitchen. If you have space underneath some of your high kitchen cupboards then hooks can be easily installed on the bottom and used for hanging things like mugs or cooking utensils.

There are lots of different spaces where hooks could be used so have a look around the kitchen and see where they might be of use to you.

Declutter

When you’re already lacking in space and storage there is no reason to keep things you don’t use. I think we all have one of those junk drawers in our kitchen or that blender that never gets used. Once you have decluttered you will have more storage space for the things you do use.

Although small kitchens can be hard to work with at times, if you make the most of the space you do have then it can be a much better room in your house.
