Does Keeping Your Car In A Garage Save Money On Car Insurance? (The Truth Revealed)’

Posted on March 11, 2024March 11, 2024 by Lyndsey OHalloran

Collaborative post

For decades, car insurance providers have told us that keeping our cars locked in a garage overnight will save money on car insurance. The theory is a simple one; cars locked in garages are kept safe from a) the elements and b) criminals. There’s less chance of your car being damaged or stolen by outsiders when it’s hidden away, and the odds of extreme weather conditions causing harm also diminish.

And yet, there was a recent study mentioned in the news claiming that cars kept in garages cost more money to insure. This goes against everything were were told in the past, so which is true?

We’re very keen to save as much money as possible across all facets of life, which is why we want to figure out which option saves the most on car insurance. We’ll start with the arguments against keeping a car in the garage before figuring out how to save the most cash.

Why Keeping A Car In Your Garage Raises Insurance Premiums

Based on the previously mentioned study, the main arguments are this:

  • People can break into your garage without you knowing
  • Things can fall on your car in a garage and damage it
  • There’s a risk of damaging your car when driving in or out of the garage

If we’re being perfectly honest, we struggle to see how any of these points make sense. Yes, someone can break into your garage without you hearing while you sleep, but how will they drive your car away? They need to unlock the door, hoping you still don’t hear that. It sounds like a silly argument to us!

Yes, things can fall on your car and you may risk scraping the sides while parking it in your garage. But the same is true when your car is outside – even more so. Other cars can scrape your car if it’s parked on the side of the road while debris from your roof or a tree could damage it on the driveway.

Why Keeping A Car In Your Garage Saves Money

To us, the findings in this so-called study make zero sense and aren’t well-argued. Every point can be met with a counterpoint that shows a garage is the safest place for a car. If you lock your car in a garage with secure roller garage doors, it’s very hard for someone to get in or out. Provided you don’t store things on the walls or in the rafters, there’s no fear of your car getting damaged while inside.

All the while, your car is protected from the elements and anything outside that might harm it. Nine times out of ten, if you run a car insurance comparison quote, it will be cheaper when you say your car is parked in a locked garage overnight.

Keeping that in mind, if you’re hoping to save money in today’s tricky economic climate, parking your car in a garage is a smart move. It can genuinely slash hundreds off your annual premium – and it’ll keep going down if you make no claims as this proves your garage isn’t a safety hazard!
