5 ways to modernise an old house

Posted on June 21, 2021June 12, 2021 by Lyndsey OHalloran

Although new builds might be tempting, they lack character and charm but these are things you can get with an older house. Unfortunately, older houses, unless already renovated, tend to come with issues and things that need updating. Here are 5 ways to modernise an old house.

1. New heating system

A lot of older houses sadly don’t come with combo boilers and central heating. Some older houses have real fires or they might have night storage heaters and these can be really expensive and an absolute pain to run. You might also have an older tank style boiler and it can be long and expensive to have to heat that up before you need a bath. Upgrading your heating and water system would be a really good thing to prioritise.

2. Double glazing

Older properties might also need an upgrade when it comes to the windows. Period homes might have sash windows, which look lovely but don’t do the best job of keeping the heat inside. Replacing all of the windows in a house does cost quite a lot, especially if you get the doors done as well, but if you do them one by one instead you can spread the cost over time.

3. A new kitchen

Kitchens seem to be the new living rooms and they can be the place where people want to spend a lot of time when they’re at home. You might want to think about replacing your current kitchen with a brand new one. A kitchen designer could help you to make the most of your space and to have all of the storage you might need.

4. Fresh paint

A quick and relatively cheap way to modernise an older house is to redecorate. You don’t have to make any major changes or pay out loads of money but sometimes a fresh coat of paint in a. room can make it feel new and more modern, especially if it hasn’t been done for a few years.

5. Replace flooring

Just like with the walls your floors might need a bit of a makeover. This could be anything from sanding original floorboards, replacing old and tired carpets or laying new hardwood flooring. These changes will really give each room a lift and make them feel lighter and more current than they were before.
