4 Steps to Return Home After It’s Been Damaged

Posted on September 2, 2022September 2, 2022 by Lyndsey OHalloran

Coming back to your house after a storm or severe criminal damage can be stressful. You don’t know the extent of the damage, and there’s always the chance that things could be worse than you fear. If possible, you can stay with friends and family or in a hotel for now, but you’ll need to come home eventually. If you want to ensure you can do so without any hassle, here are four steps to return home after it’s been damaged.

Check It’s Safe to Return

Although you’re itching to get back to your home and enjoy a night in your own bed, you cannot do this if the house is not safe for you to return to. Although it may look ready on the outside, there could be structural issues, mold, and other problems that can put your health and safety at risk.

Before returning officially, you and your family – or even a qualified inspector can explore different parts of your house to check that everything is okay. If they give you the all-clear, you can start to think about moving back in.

Clear Out Any Debris

If your house experienced broken windows and doors or even more substantial damage through flooding, there is a chance that you’ll find debris throughout the property. Clearing this debris before you move back can make it easier to live and clean up, ensuring that you don’t encounter any unpleasant surprises later on.

You should also look at debris that could cause blockages, especially around the gutters and downpipe. If there is a risk that the weather could return, or you’re close to winter, removing this debris will prevent further property damage.

Start the Compensation Process

Property damage can lead to severe financial strain, even if you have house and contents insurance. The sooner you begin the residential property damage claim compensation process, the sooner you’ll be able to get back to living your life as normal.

Choosing experienced and dedicated attorneys can make this process much more straightforward, and you will get what you need and deserve with little hassle to help with potentially extensive repairs in and around your home.

Seek Repairs and Replacements

You will encounter some repairs and replacements that you can do yourself. These can include refitting doors or general household cleaning. However, there could be other demands that require professional experience. Although you can think about roof repair, this can be dangerous for novices. With issues as hazardous as this, it’s always best to speak to a professional to protect you and ensures the job is done correctly. Shopping around for reliable services at a fair cost can help make your home livable.

Coming Home

It is always traumatic to see your property in tatters, and you may not even recognize it. But, what’s important is being able to move back in when it is safe for you and your family to do so. There may be things that have been damaged and lost, but as long as you and your family have your health and your home is ready for you to return, you can start to rebuild.
