Very free people want to live in a home that is dark and dingy because ti can start to feel very oppressive and depressing when there is not enough light, especially natural light, around for you to live your life in.
That being the case, let’s look at a few things you can do to increase the natural light in your home right now.
1. Add Rooflights for That “Wow” Factor
One of the best ways to get more natural light reliably into your home is to add rooflights to any flat roofs you may have. They will ensure that your home (at least in rooms where they are fitted) are always bathed in light when there is light outside. They’re also amazing for stargazing from the comfort of your own couch!
2. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall (Or Everywhere, Really)
Mirrors are the ideal thing to hang in your home because they will reflect any natural light that is beaming into your home around the room, making it feel even lighter than before. Now, that’s what I call a magic mirror!
3. Swap Heavy Curtains for Light, Airy Ones
We all love a good dramatic curtain swoosh, but heavy drapes are basically sunlight blockers. If you want more natural light, trade in those thick, brooding curtains for something light and breezy. Think sheer or linen fabrics that let the light in without sacrificing privacy. Your windows are the VIP entrances for daylight—don’t let them be bouncers keeping all that sunshine out.
4. Go for Light-Colored Paint
Dark, moody walls can be cozy, sure, but they’re also natural light’s worst enemy. If you’re serious about brightening up your space, go for light, neutral paint colors. Whites, soft greys, and pale pastels reflect light better than darker shades, making the whole room feel more open and airy. It’s like giving your walls a daylight upgrade without needing extra windows. Pro tip: A semi-gloss finish reflects more light than matte!
5. Declutter Like You Mean It
Clutter is more than just an eyesore—it’s a light-blocker. If your windowsills are crammed with knick-knacks, plants, or that stack of unread books (guilty), you’re probably blocking out valuable sunlight. Keep your windows clear and let the light flow freely. A clean space is a brighter space, so maybe it’s time to Marie Kondo your way to better lighting.
6. Go Glassy with Your Doors
If your interior doors are solid, you’re missing out on a great opportunity to let light travel between rooms. Consider swapping them for doors with glass panels, or if you’re feeling particularly bold, try an all-glass door (frosted for privacy, of course). It’s an easy way to spread light throughout your home without major renovations.
7. Open Up with Open Shelving
Closed-off cabinets can create shadows and dark corners. Open shelving, especially in kitchens or living rooms, lets the light travel more freely. Plus, it gives you a chance to show off your stylish plates or cute plants. Just remember, open shelving requires a bit of neatness—so, no hiding your junk drawer there!
8. Add Skylights for Extra Drama
Okay, this one’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re ready to level up your natural light game, skylights are your friend. Not only do they flood your room with daylight, but they also make everything look a bit more luxurious. Perfect for bathrooms, bedrooms, or that fancy new home office you’re pretending to work in.
Let there be light!
